7 Ways to Improve Your Chances of Loan Approval

BankLoanKart Team · 2 min read · Loan Tips

A lender decides on three things: can you repay, have you repaid before, and are your papers in order. You can improve all three before you apply. None of these steps costs money.

1. Check your credit score first

Get your credit report before the lender does. Look for a loan you never took or a payment wrongly shown as late, and ask the bureau to correct it. A correction can take a few weeks, so do this early.

2. Pay every EMI and card bill on time

One late payment stays on your report for a long time. Set an automatic payment for at least the minimum due on every card.

3. Use less of your credit card limit

If your limit is Rs 1 lakh and you spend Rs 90,000 every month, lenders see a person who depends on credit. Try to stay well under half of the limit, or pay the bill twice in a month.

4. Lower your existing EMIs

Lenders compare your total EMIs with your income. If a small loan has only a few EMIs left, closing it before you apply frees up room for the new loan.

5. Ask for an amount that fits your income

Asking for much more than your income supports is a common reason for rejection. It is better to be approved for the right amount than rejected for a large one.

6. Do not apply everywhere at once

Each application makes the lender check your score. Many checks in a short time make you look in urgent need of money. Pick one or two lenders that suit your profile.

7. Keep your papers clean and complete

Same name and date of birth on every paper. Full bank statements, not screenshots. Salary or sales coming into the bank account, not in cash. If you changed jobs recently, keep the old and new appointment letters.

What does not help

Nobody can guarantee approval, and nobody honest will ask you for money to "get it passed". If someone asks for an advance fee before your loan is approved, walk away.

The short version

Know your score, lower what you owe, ask for a sensible amount, apply to few lenders and give clean papers. These five things decide most cases.
